Choose Washington, D.C. for an Historic Vacation

Guest post written by Christine Duncan

This year I wanted to do something historic for our family’s summer vacation. I’d been thinking about seeing Washington, D.C. for years. I went there once with my family when I was in the fourth grade. That was a long time ago, and even though I have fond memories of that vacation, I felt more than a little daunted at the thought of planning my own family’s trek to the nation’s capital.

Fortunately, I have satellite internet Michigan, so I booted up my computer and got to work doing some research. I know, I could have called a travel agent, but I really wanted to do this myself to make it a really special trip. With huges net, it was an easy project.

I looked up attractions like the many museums of the Smithsonian Institution – did you know that none of them charge admission? I also found a website for Mt. Vernon, which was George Washington’s plantation. I’ve definitely added that to our itinerary. The house and grounds look beautiful!

Washington, D.C. is a big city, but it looks like they’ve got a really good mass transit system, and I was able to find and book a hotel that somehow manages to be close to almost everything we want to see while we’re there. I did it all online, myself, and I can hardly wait!
